What do you guys think if I went with this Brooks saddle and changed my handle bar tape from black to green:

Gel padded.  The seats with the cutouts are better but are quite narrow and more for racing and not comfort.  Brooks saddles, while expensive, don't have any of the hard support structure of normal seats.  You have to break them in, but they're much more forgiving than the hard seats.

I'd think hipster

Well, it's green or tan and I'd rather not go tan.  You hate cyclists anyway so I'm not sure why it would matter.

I have a Specialized moutain bike (called a Rockhopper, I think)

Anyway, whenever I go for a bike ride, I just assume I will be sore for the next few days

There are ways to minimize that.  If it's leg pain, that only goes away as you build muscle.

Lol, God no. Riding a bike rarely results in leg pain. Way too many hours running and hiking for that.

It's usually in my crotch region. Specifically the taint and the inner thighs. Feels like they're bruised.

I have a Terry Fly saddle on my assault bike...it has a cut out down the length of it which is very taint friendly.

You need a new saddle.

Those are great if you're thin, not so much if you're heavy.  Good seeing you amongst the living after yesterday :P.

Those Brooks saddles hurt like freak before they are broken in...at least that was my experience.  Plus they are heavy.  But the brass rivets in the hide do look cool, and that is of course the most important consideration, right?

:nono:

The supported seats are really painful to people my size, hence the Brooks saddle.  The only consideration is what's not going to feel like either a cinderblock to the taint or a dildo with a cut out pounding straight on my balls.

I'll never ride on a Selle Italia saddle again...I had the Ti rails break on one when I was still 25 miles from home and had to ride the rest of the way with my undercarriage hovering over the bare seatpost lest I be skewered like a kabob.

I'll take the heavy steel and leather instead.  Remember - I'm John Goodman and not some twink.

The serious distance riders slap silicon stuff all over their junk.  I can't imagine anything would keep one's nuts from going numb during a triple century though.

I'm not John Goodman. If I'm ever his size, I will be eating a bullet. 250 was the heaviest I've ever been and it felt awful. While I'll never see 185 again, the 210-225 range is good for me.

My nuts are never the problem, it's always right behind it and the inner thighs.

2nd ride in nearly 30 months, 9 miles today and 9 on Sunday. Today felt way better, just wish I didn't live in the freaking hill country. Every way in or out of my house is going up - or so it feels.

It gets easier with each ride, trust me.  What kind of bike are you riding now?

Trek 1200, Campy on the front, shimano on the back.  Best I did was in 2006 when I rode 2,600 miles. Goal is to just ride 3x a week for now and build up from there.

I'm aiming for 5,000 miles before December 31st of this year.  So far I'm at 225 so I've got to do approximately 20 miles a day for the rest of the year to make it.

You are commuting right?

5k would be awesome.

Are any of you using bikejournal.com (or is it.net)?

Four days a week about 14 miles each day, but I'm doing at least two century rides this year and I'll be biking to the stadium.

When you start getting up into that kind of mileage you need to start being really proactive about chain maintenance or the whole drivetrain becomes a $hitshow.  Back in 2001-2008 I was riding 8,000+ miles a year, and even using Wippermann stainless chains with White lightning lube after every ride I was getting pretty significant chain stretch every few months.

Given my size I have a feeling I'm going to need to do a lot more than just chain maintenance.  I think this is what I'm going to get custom made wheels (deep Vs with 36 spokes), keep extra chains, oil the chain after every ride, and have at least three bikes (a single speed/fixed gear flip-flop hub beater, the Cross Check, and a Long Haul Trucker).  Just have to keep extra wheels ready for the inevitable tacoing/wrecking.

A chain measuring tool is a good $10 investment.  If you switch out chains (and clusters) before wear gets above the nag zone, your cranks will last forever.
