If you ask Tom, it's because he has inferior range.  I personally don't follow other teams' players closely enough to say.

I'm sure some of it is because he's in NY.

Ryan Zimmerman has the fewest errors (2) in the Majors for third basemen.

David Wright has the most errors ( 8 ) in the Majors for third basemen.

But Zimmerman had a ton of errors last season and people were still lauding him for his gold glove caliber defense :? So it's obviously based on a bias. And Wright's bat is far superior to Zimmerman's.
