When did the 2nd gen come out? Damnit. I bought one in June.

Got my new (2nd gen) Nexus 7 last night if anyone wants some "real world" opinions.  I also own a first gen Nexus 7.

Going off memory here so I might be off a bit but the main differences with the new one are slightly faster CPU w/ more cores, higher resolution display (1920x1200 vs 1280x720), more RAM, different dimensions (narrower, taller, thinner), an added notification LED and rear 5MP camera, and a newer version of bluetooth.

So far my general impression is that all the little things add up to a nice upgrade, but nothing worth getting crazy over if you already have a first gen.  I'd still use either of them happily, and the first gen just got the 4.3 update yesterday, so they're both still cutting edge in that respect.

Aren't they both quad core?  Notification LED would be nice to have.  I'm interested in how the battery life stacks up, what with a lower capacity battery, more powerful CPU and GPU, and more pixels to push.

i am interested. i have the gen 1 kindle fire and love it, but want to eventually get a full-service tablet with a little more power. i am looking at winter 2014 as my possible purchase time, but the nexus is my top choice in the future

isn't the point of nexus to avoid having to do that?

I suppose.  I've never bothered with it on either of my N7's, or even rooting them, but then the extra home screens don't bother me, either.  I'm not going to lie, I look down on you a little for saying anything nice about TouchWiz ;)

I've gotten used to it- once you get rid of the samsung keyboard, it isn't intrusive

Added value stuff like this is why I love CyanogenMod - https://plus.google.com/110558071969009568835/posts/DxuEM7Z8phF

Chromecast all the things? That's actually possible.

I added some framework extensions to +CyanogenMod to let any app which plays audio/video using the MediaPlayer to be sent to the Chromecast.

This supports both local content (stuff on the SD Card) and remote content (podcasts).

I'm starting to read about this, but this is an entire OS to replace that which is on your droid tablet?

Yes, CyanogenMod is a ROM to replace stock android.  It's very close to stock android in terms of look and feel.

now that you have https://play.google.com/store/devices/collection/web_home_5000005_partnerUS I'm wondering if the days of needing custom roms are starting to come to an end

CM still adds quite a bit of functionality over stock Android, but I do hope the section you linked continues to expand.

I think it will (why Moto X isn't there is just mind boggling) and the more people who realize that $600 up front plus prepay is cheaper than $200 up front plus 2 year contract, the more they'll sell

Looking into getting a new LG Optimus F3 (Android 4.1.2) by on Virgin Mobile, does anyone have experience with this phone?

I have an existing LG Android phone on Virgin Mobile and am happy with the coverage, but it's ~2 years old.

...$200 more than the Lumia 521.

Are you seriously comparing a phone with a 1080p screen and a phone with an 800x480 screen? :|
