i'm sure they just wanted an outside opinion. seeing how McLaren and Bowa are friends, maybe he thought Bowa would be able to spot something.
Larry Bowa was Joe Torre's third base and infield coach for a very long time, and was one of the best out there. Great baseball mind but failed at managing due to a bit of a temper. Likely is very happy to sit in a studio all day and talk about baseball. I really don't have a problem in bringing in one of the best to help.
