Stephen King
« Topic Start: June 02, 2008, 04:56:03 PM »
This kid is raising some serious eyebrows in Hagerstown.

.340 AVG...2 HR...15 RBI...2 SB...106 AB...And the most important stat at all for ML success, that you need to show in the MIL....397 OBP...22 SO  :?...9 BB

I hope he keeps it up. Atleast we have one middle infielder that can hit and field (4 errors) (16 errors for Demond)

My thoughts are that although he is striking out a bit more than you would like, he is getting on-base, and stealing bases. He looks to be an ideal #2 spot hitter.

He turns 21 in October by the way.

Yeah he's impressed me so far this season as well, but he was injured for most of April and he recently made the switch over to third base. I don't know if this switch is permanent though, because he was a high pick and the FO does consider him a top prospect, so I don't know why they would put him at third so he can be blocked by Zimmerman for the forseeable future. He and Jake Smolinski are about the only two middle infielders in the minors I keep track of.

What are the odds that his nickname is "Cujo"?

It would be pretty darn cool to have a guy called Stephen King in the majors!

I wouldn't put it past anyone. There are some pretty clever nicknames given in the Majors.

Oh, of course. I got the Diamondbacks feed on MLB.tv for the last series and they had some pretty bad nicknames for their players.

I like the nicknames that they had in the '30s. My favorite is Hugh (Losing Pitcher) Mulcahy. May not be clever but it was to the point.

Yeah but he was batting near the Mendoza line at the beginning of May. He's also younger than King.

And all our hitting prospects had a slow start, I see Smolinski having a big year.

Smolinski recently broke a bone in his thumb.  I understand that he is out for 8 - 10 weeks.

That shouldn't be a concern since he started really slow and had a pretty good performance in may. However, I would be more concerned about his injuries because he does look injury prone (out for 8-10 weeks ). I don't put much importance in hr and rbi's but Smolinski was defined as having good power and I don't think he has that much power but that could come with time and he has good all around skills. You see that he is looking to improve his patience as of late, he drawed alot of walks in his last games. Too bad he gets injured this much because he is an intriguing prospect.

That's a shame.  Smolinski was hitting .321 in the month of May.

King's had a consistent year hitting at Hagerstown but only a .332 OBP because he doesn't walk much.  He's really not played as a middle infielder all year.  Out of 78 games he's played 73 at 3B, 5 at SS with 19 errors on the season.

I wish they would slide King in at second to see how he handles that more. 3B is taken care of with Zimmerman. I think if they were sure of him at short, he would be playing there full time. So I say try him at second, where the pickings are slim aside from Bonifacio.

The only reason why he's playing 3B is because he's the best fielding third baseman on the team. He was drafted as a SS.

King has worked out at 2B quite a bit down in Florida.  His transition there is easy because of his extended play at SS.  I think they moved him over to 3B to take immediate advantage of his arm strength, and feel that his transition there has been very good, in spite of some errors, because the position is so different than the middle of the field - a lot less reads and far more reaction at 3B.  I think he has enough versatility to convert to any positon on the field should his hitting dictate getting him into a lineup.  I heard last night he made a lunging backhand stab to help save a Suns win in the 9th, with the tieing run at 2B.

Botched a catch at 1st last night - a perfectly placed throw across the diamond for what would have been the third out - took it off the heel of his glove, allowed two unearned runs to score.
