Can we go back to talking about music or making fun of Nickelback?

Once played a trumpet.  It was good for learning the various chord structures in music.  But I wish I had learned the sax and the piano.

I had to look this up. Man you're weird

Something tells me the the theremin in the Beach Boys' "Good Vibrations" was played the more traditional way, with metal rings on your fingers.

Fishbone has been known to play with a theremin live. Fishbone RULES

One time I was in the Quarterdeck lounge in Old Town, upstairs from the Wharf, and Jimmy Thackery and the Assassins were doing some incredible fiery blues tunes.  Thackery had a cordless guitar, and wandered around the joint jamming hard, then stopped at the table next to me and grabbed a long-necked Bud bottle and played slide with it.  When he finished the riff, he chugged the remaining beer (about half) and returned the empty to its previous resting place, and rejoined the band onstage.  What a great show.

Thackery was one of the key members of the Nighthawks, in case anybody was wondering.

That's pretty cool. Lowell George used to use a spark plug wrench.

I remember reading that he had suffered a hand injury, and this greatly hampered his ability to play guitar in the conventional manner, so he went to playing mostly slide instead.  On one of their albums, a band member (or Lowell?) is heard talking about using a Craftsman 7/16" socket wrench.

Probably George. A deep socket (spark plug) would make a perfect bottleneck. My main gripe about the slide guitar is that eventually everybody starts to sound like Duane Allman or Elmore James.

I have a friend who plays in a local band, and he occasionally plays a "Weisenborn", a variation of a slide guitar.  There's a whole cult of players who play the different slides, nuances of sound that you or I would be oblivious to.  Here's my friend, with some of his fellow slide nerds, figuring it all out.  Check out the vast array of instruments they are experimenting with, too.

Tom, your Insect Surfer stuff is totally in my surf music wheelhouse. Nice!

I'll load my ipod up with stuff from their site.

You might like Man or Astroman? They started out as straight up surf rock, then got muy experimental with vocoders, theremins, all kinds of weird stuff. Then they had multiple bands touring as Man or Astroman? playing the same songs - just creative, hilarious, awesome stuff. Their cover of the MST3K theme song is the best.

I don't quite get that, but perhaps resophonic is a more expansive term, that includes the subset dobros as well as the all-important Weisenborn class.

It's the experimental, jazzy feel that I like. I love fusion stuff - there's a band called Countdown to Putsch that's free jazz/hardcore punk (it's a bit hard to take), Alarum is Australian jazz/metal - Candiria used to be awesome jazz metal with xylophones and trumpets, There's a band called William Carlos Williams that plays instrumental fuzzed out heavy jazz rock. The genre-breaking just appeals to me.

On Mike Auldridge's webpage they are called resophonic guitars, just thought it was weird to change the name.
