Beer, Beer, and More Beer (2008-2013)
« Topic Start: March 29, 2008, 10:35:43 PM »
After seeing the Orioles game tonight, I have to tell you all that the beer selection was much better at RFK.  Miller has a lock on all beer at Nationals Park.  Well, there is Bud & Bud Light too.  But no ESB or IPA in the entire park !  My wife and I spent more time walking throughout the park than watching the game.

I need some help from all WNFF who feel the beer selection is inferior.  Please help me contact Stan Kasten about the pathetic beer selection.

Upstairs under the scoreboard features the Miller Lite "Beerpen", so you'll be at home up there.

Well, the Cap City plan was a shame.  Cap City pulled out of the deal at Nationals Park because Miller would not let them bring in their tanks and brew on site (like at their restaurant).  Cap City could see bringing in kegs from another one of their restaurants, for they felt they would be bring in kegs constantly.  So whatever deal Miller has with Stan Kasten, it allowed Miller to call the shots.  So there is no variety now except Millar products.

Wasn't even aware of it, to be perfectly honest (problem is, so much of the specialist catering is in restricted areas). Never been to Capitol City Brewing either.

On the 300/400 concourse (my seat is in 312) there were two quality-beer outlets (the two 'Base Line Brews' kiosks along the interior of the concourse facing just away from the playing area), one of which (dispensing Bass and Stella) was not operational at all, and the other (dispensing Pilsner Urquell draught and a couple of the Hook and Ladder line in bottles - tried their Brown which wasn't bad) not fully up till about the second inning - and not surprisingly sporting some of the longest queues on that level. The food concessions along the exterior of the concourse are complete write-offs as far as beer is concerned (sorry, I don't regard Corona, Blue Moon or Leinies Red as 'quality' beers) with little on offer besides Bud/Miller.

I'll put some of this down to teething pains but they've got quite a way to go to get the beer offerings up in Hoipolloi Country back up to the level we enjoyed on the RFK 300 level last season.

I wasn't, but I'm hoping as the season progresses, they'll add some more independent beers. I missed the Hook and Ladder bottles that Old Chelsea mentioned, so I'll have to be on the lookout for those. Beer selection is one area in which Camden Yards will always be > than Nationals Park, I'm afraid. On the bright side, with limited beer options, I might lose some weight this season...

Those were at the Base Line Brews near, I think, the access to sections 416/417 - the one further up the concourse as you proceed anticlockwise from the South Capitol Street side of the stadium - there were two Hook and Ladder varieties, Backdraft Brown and Lighter. This particular kiosk also had Pilsner Urquell and Blue Moon on draught (the latter not working last night) and Guinness cans and Yuengling bottles, and I think a couple of others in bottles.

Still no country for hopheads, but at least I won't die of thirst now. But I think the hot drink tonight is going to be something HOT.

Wow. I am glad I found this thread after the beers were found. Otherwise I'd be packing a flask of rye. Come to think of it, might do it anyway.

Thanks for your ideas.  We did look at all the beer stands on the 3rd level before the steps up to sections 416/417.  But there was no sign ofHook and Ladder beers - in cans/bottles or on draft.  It's possible the cans/bottles were already sold.

But let's face it - with all the stands in the park, there should be ALOT more variety.

I did get this response when I wrote to the team yesterday:

Dear Nationals Fans,

Thank you for your email.  We will have a very limited access to stcomments@nationals.com from 3/28 to 3/30.  Our entire staff will be on-stie at Nationals Park.  We will do our best to respond to your email in a timely manner. Our executive offices will be open until 5:30pm on March 28th.  Please call (202) 675-6287, option zero to speak with our receptionist.  We will do our best to assist your call.  Thanks and we hope to see you this weekend!

Sincerely,
Washington Nationals Baseball Club

So maybe this will get heard and the team will think of some ideas.  I'll definately follow up with them on this beer variety need.

You may be right - I didn't see Hook and Ladder at that kiosk at all, and they also ran out of Urquell a half hour before first pitch. The other kiosk, near the other end of the 300/400 concourse with Bass and Stella, also ran out about the second inning. The quality-beer situation was indeed rather dire for most of last night.

I don't know, I am still discovering beer so maybe I am not the best to judge this but there seemed like an awful lot of beer at the stadium to me.

Unless they have Shiner Bock, a craft stout, bitters, or Samuel Smith, I'm not 100% satisfied

The Nationals should use their largest scoreboard in MLB for the exclusive purpose of listing the locations in the stadium to find each of the 101 brands of beer they are selling, as well as the brands of hard liquor and wine.

Now we are going to be flooded with all these faux-craft beers. It shouldnt make a difference who makes it as long as it tastes good. But there is some satisfaction to be gained by getting something good that you cant get anywhere that some guy thought up in his basement. Basement might be stretch, but at least without the help of an army of chemical engineers and food scientists.

Frequently, if a bar has its "own" beer on tap but they are not a brewery, it just some kind of Macro, with a different tap. A bartender was telling me that nobody buys or wants Michelob Amber Bock as Michelob Amber Bock, but if you give it a cute name related to your bar, people love it

I saw Shiner Bock at the park.  But in my opinion, it's one of the most overrated beers on the planet.  I lived in Texas for two years, and everyone loves Shiner beers, cause they're from Texas!  So I tried it, and was sorely disappointed.  But, you can find it at Nats Park.  Somewhere.

Shiner Bock was a love affair I started in college, and consummated many a time. I have told Belgians to their faces that Shiner is the best beer in the world, and endured their ribbing. Of course the second best beer in the world I had in Belgium.  Shiner is best from the keg.

By craft stout, I mean from a place where you see the brewing equipment behind glass - Guinness Extra Cold in the UK tastes just as good - but it lacks pizazz here, or in other countries where it is brewed locally

I was expecting a hearty, flavorful beer, but for how dark it is it tastes watery and thin to me.

I'd put up Anchor Porter   :worship: , or Brooklyn's Chocolate Stout  against it any day.
