You're vastly over simplifying.

Please, teach me about how to make a nuanced post, I'm ready to learn.

Saving Strasburg for the future and striving to succeed this season are not a zero sum game.

If they don't make a move, it actually is a zero sum game

No, they're not, but saving Strasburg for the future and making no move to address that giant-size-hole you'll be leaving in the rotation is cause for  .  I'm all for being careful with Stras for the long-term.  But knowing that, you also have to recognize that we're clearly (with Stras) one of the top 3 teams in the NL.  Just shutting him down and being content to see if the team can coast into the playoffs and succeed there based on the momentum they already have is bad strategy.

Shut him down, sure, but then don't stand pat and hope for the best - make a move to show that you understand that your window arrived one year earlier than you expected and that you want to capitalize on that.  The Nats are now (finally) drawing mid-20s to mid-30s most nights - standing up and saying "Hey we're going to consciously take our best player off the field and make no further moves to improve the team," doesn't seem like a good way to build on that momentum.

Signing EJax and trading for Gio could arguably be a move. I am not easy on Rizzo but it is hard to fault him for not rushing into a trade before the deadline.

Those were the moves that made the window arrive one year early.  Not making another one now that it's here is just spitting on opportunity.

I wouldn't say Rizzo NEEDS to make a move at the deadline for someone to replace Strasburg, but it would be a good idea.  Do any of you want Edwin Jackson, Ross Detwiler, or John Lannan starting a playoff game?  It would be disastrous.

freak trading for Kevin Millwood too.  That would be worse than starting Jackson, Detwiler, or Lannan in a playoff game.  Get that boy Grienke and let him flourish.

Well, Stark says we are looking into 4-5 starters.

Quote from: Jayson Stark, @jaysonst
Hearing Dempster is one of 4 or 5 starters #Nationals are pursuing. Would need to get "creative" to pull off this deal.

Yep, I think this is the beginning of the end

Oh well, it was fun while it lasted. At least we won't have to worry about innings limits for Strasburg anymore

I'm going to be here for a while.

We'll be lucky to win 3 of our next 10 games after that.

Yeah, tonight was not good night for the home team.

What an amazing collapse.

When you're up 9-0 do you ever think you're going to lose?

lets hope this isnt the khalil greene chad cordero 5-0 9th inning collapse of 2005. might be a little off on the details. why the f did they curse this team by bringing chad cordero in the house tonight

The aftermath of this collapse is going to make last year's Pirates slide look miniscule in comparison.

Ahhh, feels like old times!

Alright so seriously all the beat writer's twitter accounts and nearly everyone here, AND Bob and F.P. were talking about how this is the worst loss in the history of the franchise in DC.  Well, duh!  This is the first time it legitimately felt like the team could contend so when you lose a 9-0 lead to your division rival right on your heels it is the worst ever.

I don't feel comfortable with Jackson or Lannan tomorrow, OR Det on Sunday.  This may be a lost series and I feel that this may be the last time the Nats see first place unless the pitching gets it together.

BTW, who commented me in saying that my thoughts were jumping to conclusions?  That is the LoD way!

Khalil Greene was exactly what I thought of while watching this unfold.  I'm officially in the LoD camp now...Tonight was epic, it will be hard for me to believe this team will ever be able to hold a lead again.

IMO this was on Strasburg, he was handed a 9-0 lead, the Nats needed a shutdown inning and instead he gives up four runs which put the Braves right back in the game.  Shut him down as soon as he hits the limit, not that it will matter by then.

The season was lost long before that series

It was in fact lost on the 3 game sweep on the road, at the hands of the Atlanta Braves

It's not his fault

This is what you get the first year after TJ surgery. You get up and down. That's just how it works.

You needed the bullpen and the defense to do their job tonight. Didn't happen.

That's how that goes.
