So the Royals finally get a pitching staff to go along with their offense.  This could be interesting.

Kansas City Royals ‏@Royals
#Royals acquire RHPs James Shields, Wade Davis and player to be named or cash from Tampa Bay for Myers, Odorizzi, Montgomery and Leonard.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal adds that the Rays will receive Wil Myers and a package of prospects in return. The deal still isn't finalized, but it looks like the Royals have landed the front-line starter they've been looking for this offseason. Meanwhile, the Rays have finally cashed in their pitching depth for Myers, who is widely considered one of the best prospect in baseball. ESPN's Jerry Crasnick hears that more even players are involved. It's a doozy of a deal for both sides.

Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports that the Rays have traded James Shields and Wade Davis to the Royals.

The Royals better be ready to contend the next couple of years or this deal could really hurt them in the long run.

Offensively, they're not that far away.

Giving up Myers alone was alot, but look at what else they're giving up:

#4 prospect in Odorizzi: he's probably the Rays' 4-5 this year
#5 in Montgomery
Development piece in Leonard, but he has pop

Montgomery has bombed recently. Not nearly the prospect he once was.

Having said that... Myers will likely be a stud with Longo for years to come.

There's no question they're giving up a lot.  But they've still got a pretty solid offense and if they'd let go of their Frenchy fetish, they could be really good offensively.

Great move for the Rays.  Meyers is major league ready right now so he'll add some pop to their lineup right away.  Longo and Meyers are locked up for the next 6 years.  Love it.

Getting Odorizzi allows them to move Price, if they can't work out a long-term deal

They are sending about 4 prospects in exchange

Works for both sides. Tampa has pitching out the wazoo and is looking to add another stud young hitter to complement Longoria; Kansas City is needlessly trading any prospect who's been even slightly behind schedule in order to fill their roster with average-to-good players at their peaks.

That is to say, it works for both sides if you agree with Dayton Moore's nutty roster construction. Seriously, trading Myers, Odorizzi and Montgomery for James Shields and Wade Davis is basically saying you don't believe in those prospects reaching the potential everyone else thinks they can hit.

As Dave Cameron tweets:
I'm as big a James Shields fan as there is, but Royals needed to get more good players, not turn good players into other good players.

Career defining move for Moore. Myers is going to make him regret this for years to come, but they probably do have a shot at winning their division now.

Moore got fleeced. Friedman and Beane continue to be on another level.

The Royals were in a tough spot.  I can see why they made the trade.  No good free agent pitcher would go there unless they started winning games.  They couldn't start winning games without good pitchers.  So I guess this is the best they could do.  But they wouldn't have been in the tough spot they are in without several boneheaded decisions made by Moore.

I hope the Royals make the playoffs.  I'll be rooting for them.  Shields is very good and Wade Davis is a solid pitcher.

Career ending move, I suspect.

Would he have even been around for Myers to make enough of an impact to save his job? Embattled GMs have little incentive to stock the farm vs. win now

A guy I've seen Myers compared to is Nick Swisher.

Well, he was around last year, so yes, he would have been around long enough for Myers to make and impact more than what he ran out last year.  It would not have been a disaster to play Myers in CF in 2012 if Moore still had his Frenchy obsession in right.  As for Montgomery, the Rays are under no pressure to bring him up until he establishes control.  If he does, then this trade goes from rays favorable to a heist.

So does Tampa have enough pitching to deal us Price next offseason?

Probably, but we don't have the prospects, at least not right now.
