Let the bidding on Soler begin. He had been waiting to be cleared by the U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control.

I want him as well, but has anyone actually seen him play?  Scouting report?  I remember seeing a scouting report on him on baseball america, but don't feel like looking it up.

The Nationals have also kept tabs on Cuban defector Jorge Soler, an outfielder who experts believe will become one of the top prospects in baseball as soon as he signs. But the price – expected to reach somewhere around $20 million – is more than they are willing to pay

Lerners are too cheap for marque international free agents. This will bite us in the ass now that the draft is on a budget. Hopfully someone can explain it to the board.

You'd think fresh off the rousing success of the Maya signing that they'd be eager to jump in again.

Maya has proven to be reliable AAA filler.

Unfortunately Maya might be the problem. I don't know. I don't generally subscribe to the LAC viewpoint but everytime they seem interested in a big name international free agent and fail to act because they are "too expensive".

It's too bad they thought he was going to be reliable AAAA filler...

The Lerners want to sign players at bargain prices but the problem is that the other 29 teams are spending as much or more than the Nats on international scouting so true bargain deals are rare.

According to Scott Swaim, Jorge Soler flying from his home to Washington to complete a physical.

Soler would be an interesting signing.  I wonder if that means they think Harper is a CF long term (assuming this is true).

Is it possible he's doing a physical here for another team while doing paperwork that can only be done in DC?

Interesting thought, but why would the physical have to be done in DC?  The paperwork may have to be done here (not certain), but the physical is for the team and for MLB.  The results could be sent to DC from anywhere.  I believe MLB offices are in NY.

I emailed MLBTR to see if they could dig up anything.  The guy does seem to be friends with a former scout.  The only thing that makes me slightly believe it is that this is the only one of these types of tweets he has that I saw.  Usually BSers are "breaking" many stories.

What makes anyone think he is in dc other than a tweet from a throwaway account?

Scott Swaim is the jackass that did the whole MLBInsideNews thing about Fielder. So that Tweet is a joke.

Ha ha.  I really fell for that one.  Now that you mention it, I do remember the name, and the whole Fielder flying to DC for a physical thing.
