national felons league
« Topic Start: February 20, 2013, 02:15:34 PM »
It's a little too early to start the 2013 pro football thread, especially for a story like this, so maybe we need a thread dedicated to violent crimes by pro football players.

For anyone wondering why a talented starting CB slipped to the Pat's 7th round pick in the 2012 draft, we have this:
Jury finds Dennard guilty on two of three counts, including felony

Quote
The jury in the trial of Patriots Alfonzo Dennard reached its verdict this morning in a Lincoln, Neb., courtroom, and it's not good news: the cornerback was found guilty on two of three counts, including felony assault on a police officer. He was also found guilty of misdemeanor resisting arrest, first offense, but the jury found him not guilty on the charge of misdemeanor assault.

Sentencing is scheduled for April 11.

Classified as a Class 3-A felony in Nebraska, the conviction carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison or a $10,000 fine, though there is no minimum punishment.

Well, at least it isn't a murder charge pleaded down to obstruction in exchange for testimony.

Sounding like probation is most likely for him.

Probation for felony assault on a man in blue would not go down well with the police.

The convicted felon rate in the NFL is half the national average.

They can afford better lawyers, kind of like politicians.   :)

I wonder what the arrest rate is for NFL players versus the national average. I bet it's closer to national average.

Now they're saying it might be up to a year.

They've always said that you don't lose your starting spot due to an injury (unless your name is Drew or Alex).  Does the same hold true for jail time due to a felony assault?  What is the team knew of the possibility of the conviction at the time of the draft?   Is it, "we'll employ you for a year while the trial is pending so you can pay your attorney, but no guarantees after that" or is it "we knew what we were getting, were pleased, just stay in shape and we'll welcome you back in time for the playoffs, we hope?"
