That would be the 2013 thread silly.

Anyway, lets go tigers!

First time two non-expansion teams have faced each other in the World Series for the first time since 1991.

I don't think I care who wins, but if I had to chose I'd root for the Tigers.

First time meeting.  The Tigers and Giants have never played each other in the World Series before. I admit the way I said it did not make it clear.

Your examples -- Cards and Red Sox have played each other in 1967 and 1948

Phils Yanks -- 1950

Cards Tigers -- 1968 and 1934

In 1991 the Twins played the Braves for the first time, either in their former incarnation as the Washington Senators, or as the Twins.  But the first time they played each other.

Maybe he meant that it's the first time these teams have met in the world series? If so, then the Cardinals/Tigers series of 2006 was not a first time matchup since they faced each other in 1968,1934. The Phillies and Yankees met in the world series in 1950. And the Red Sox and Cardinals faced off in 1967/1946.

soxfan59 beat me to the answer.

Makes sense now.  Maybe "First time two non-expansion teams have had their initial head-to-head meeting in a world series since 1991."  I could see how that begins to sound redundant.

It might not have been "The Shot Heard 'Round the World", but the Giants are going in with flair.

first time two MVPs have played each other since the Royals (Brett) played the Phillies (Schmidt) in 1980.  (I'm assuming Posey and Miggy will be the MVPs).

Considering the Yankees dominance, this is actually surprising. 21 years since an old timey matchup, and a new WS one to boot.

Used to listen to Ernie Harwell on radio calling the Tigers games and for that reason will cheer for them.
"He stood there like the house beside the road" - Ernie's description of a batter who took a third strike.
Often think of that watching the current Nationals lineup.

SF beating Verlander would completely change the dynamic of this series.
