If the Nats and LaRoche are going back and forth about a third year, I think the Nats should take LaRoche on three years.  Three years gives you more time to evaluate Rendon and see what Espinosa can give you.  If Espinosa breaks out like Desmond, then Rendon has to wait for an open infield spot.  If Espinosa continues to struggle, you have time for Rendon to learn 2nd base.  After the third year you either use Moore or potentially Skole everyday as your 1B if they show they are regular everyday MLB players.

I've decided I definitely want Morse more than Laroche. He has the charisma and the huge fan following. And the bat is better. That's what counts at first.

Slate - I agree.  And Desmond's improvement cannot all be attributed to LaRoche's (magic) glove.  Some part of it - I think most - can be attributed to Desmond improving and maturing as a player.

I just don't see Laroche repeating last year. But Morse going in to his first, and probably only, big time contract year? I see him making the All Star team.

Well , I finally voted and I picked ALR ( no surprise there) as I think a 2-3 year signing is best in the long run for the Nats.I had hoped that we could have kept both but with the Span signing it is now impossible.I would like ALR signed and Morse traded simultaneously so we can get full value for him and not let another team gain leverage because  they know we have to move him. Also we are faced with who is our 1B in 2014. As I stated previously don't tell me TMoore or Rendon and/ or move RZ to first. Unproven commodities regarding the prospects. I have no problem with a third year for ALR and somewhere in this thread I stated we could always dump him  at the deadline to an AL team if he is in serious decline. Would I pay 3 /36 / ? Yes, we signed EJax for 11 M and we saw how that worked out. My prediction is he doesn't get a long term contract over 2 years and 17-18 M. He should have signed with Pittsburgh. There is a reason he has been on 6 teams in 7 years. But I digress. I see Morse being traded for a major league ready SP (hopefully the best Rizzo can extract from the Rays) who could use him as a 1B /DH.I hate to see him go as this is more painful than losing Dunn two years ago.

6:49pm: The Nationals have been telling people they hope to get LaRoche signed by week's end, tweets ESPN's Jayson Stark, but they still don't want to guarantee more than two years.

Good for Rizzo for taking a stand and not going beyond 2 years

LaRoche will undoubtedly take the deal. Hopefully Morse can fetch us something of value. His bat was really good but we need premium defense at every position, something he couldn't provide.

I like the standpoint.  I'd have buckled at 3 but it looks like LaRoche just doesn't have the market he may have expected.

...LaRoche just doesn't have the market he may have expected.

He'd have already been signed by someone if he had any market at all.

If he were smart, he'd stop the sillyness and sign with Rizzo on Rizzo's terms already...for the kids...

...before Rizzo decides he doesn't want him either.

Personally, it's all become rather boorish.

rizzo needs to remind him that we already paid him a 3rd year, the one where he missed almost the entire season. :)

Morse will go to a team that thinks it can contend.  Doesn't make sense for the Astros to give up anything of value for Morse.

Well, I guess they have Wesley Wright in the bullpen but they won't trade prospects. Wright is left-handed. Not sure it's an equal trade.

3 more years of team control, heading into arbitration so the Astros might be willing to move him (it seems like he'll get $2-3 million).  He seems like a Rizzo guy, hard thrower, several years of control.

Hmmmm......

If somehow they do send Michael Morse to the Astros from Wesley Wright (or someone else), I WILL go to Houston and I WILL sing "Take on me."

Houston has absolutely no need for one year of Morse and Wright is probably their closer now that Wilton Lopez is gone.

Houston would trade this guy Wright for a younger player with more years of team control.  It would be a terrible mistake for them to trade him for Morse.

I agree, it was just asked if Houston would trade for Morse and Wright is the only return that makes any sense at all. Aside from Jed Lowrie, all the other guys are kids they need for the process of building a new team.

I'm hoping that We'll re sign morse to be our DH in 5 or so years when the NL adopts it.
