Well, it looks like the world is about to be turned on its head again a la Columbine.  :( :?

FOX News sucks.  How do you go from 8 injured to 17 injured in 5 minutes time?

EDIT: JESUS! THEY JUST WENT FROM ONE DEAD TO 22!  WTF IS GOING ON IN BLACKSBURG?!

I also heard that the forst and second shootigns happen withina n hour of each other. SO the first shooting was like at 8 am and then word didn't get out fast enuff and the next happened at like 9:30 am. And the way they alledgely tried to allert the students is question. They dodn't get on a pa system, no they sent out emails. NObody is checking emails that early in the morning!!!

How does the massive 34 people death toll figure into all this?

And to Tom, that is horrible that those kids live in your area, hopefully no one you know was killed. :(

I realize that and I did not mean to diminish the tragedy. It is not only this story but other stories. The nonstop numbs one...they could take a break from a story every once in a while and fill the viewer with other things happening in the world.

Probably quite a few Hokies visit this board from time to time, so this is rather close to home...you can't turn around in DC without running into a VT grad.  A massacre like this would be horrifying enough if it were on the other side of the country, but I suspect quite a few folks around here are going to find that they are somehow indirectly affected by this in a big way in the coming days, be it people at work, neighbours, friends or friends of friends, etc.

Ya know what this kind of crap needs to take center stage on all of the TV. So perhaps we can get all of those freaks help. Mental illness is a sad think in this  country.

At the game tonight, the Nats had a moment of slience. It was a long moment...

Anyways, even on ESPN sports center they are talking about the sadness at VT.

More kids from Northern Virginia go to VA Tech than any other university hands down.  This is almost considered a local story...lots of friends and family around here were affected by this.

Va Tech has 25,000 students and is a highly regarded state school, well known for its engineering school and high admission standards. They are next to a tiny town and get a lot of snow in SW Virginia because they're so close to the mountains.  900 students living in that one dormitory building.   They had no surveillance cameras there, which would have identified the shooter after the two in the dorm were killed, before 30+ killed in Norris Hall.  The failure to shut down after the dorm shooting is going to be investigated for a long time.

Kind of sad now when we think of school shootings, the first two names that will be coming up is Columbine and Virginia Tech.  Not the kind of PR you want. :(

I find it interesting that we are all so prepared and have what it takes to set memorials, donations, honorariums, etc. but we are never prepared to do what it takes to prevent such tragedies.

Sometimes there's nothing more you can do...these kind of events happen a lot more than people think.  Whether it's 32 people at one time, or one person at a time.  A death is a death and no less tragic.  Unfortunately, that's part of life these days...you just have to deal with tragedy as best you can whenever it is visited upon you.

Having attended school only 15 minutes from there years ago and visiting the campus more often than not visiting friends, I can honestly say that the campus was not necessarily the safest or took precautions seriously enough.

I can't fully blame them, who in their right mind imagines this sort of thing could ever happen?  But still, certain things could of been prepared for and obviously weren't.

Cops and authorities did their best though and I salute them for it.  And I agree to an extent, this thing can't be FULLY prepared for just like there is no way to fully terminate terrorism.

I pretty sure that a law enforcement officer has no legal obligation to get themselves killed in the line of duty.  But one lesson of Columbine H.S. was that cops shouldn't just wait outside until the shooter(s) are done killing everyone they feel like killing.  But that was one thing I specifically saw on the cell phone video yesterday.  I heard one shot after another going off, while numerous cops waited outside, instead of storming the building.  The reports were that he spent 20 minutes killing people in Norris Hall, with 9MM and 22 caliber pistols.  Keep in mind, the dormitory killings were still unsolved crimes, which should have caused an immediate reaction to MORE shootings - which did not happen.

So those armed cops didn't look so brave to me cowering outside Norris Hall, while unarmed students were being murdered in cold blood inside, at close range.  I do suspect the shooter finally killed himself because he FINALLY heard swat team cops storming the building.  But he might have done it sooner, if those cops cowering outside had entered the building and merely started shooting at the floor.  Who knows how many would have been spared, if the shooter had killed himself SOONER, because of a FASTER police response.  This is going to be investigated for a long time.
May those students R.I.P.

Before you start crucifying the police...remember, it's much easier to criticize people's actions after the fact and not in the heat of the moment when your adrenaline is pumping and gunshots are ringing out.  The police have to approach a building with caution to make sure they are coordinated and don't end up shooting at each other or victims.  You can't just willie-nillie storm the building like damn-busters without any thought as to how you go about doing it.  The cell-phone video was just as the police had arrived to the structure...and they very obviously were assessing the situation and coordinating for a breach when the gunshots were heard.

As to the 20 minutes reported by Geraldo and all the other Monday night quarterback news anal-ists.  I take that crap with a grain of salt.

The campus police's biggest error was not locking down the campus after the first shooting had taken place and the shooter was still at large.  However...I do see their reasoning for doing so.  It was stated that they thought it was an isolated incident and that everything was over after the first murders.  I can see how someone would think that.  Who would have thought the guy would come back and start shooting people at random?  That's just bizarre and rare.

The school's biggest error will be what is apparently coming to light today...that this guy apparently had a background of mental issues and showed warning signs of instability.  In fact, it's been reported today that a professor went to the university worried about this fruit loop...but the university didn't do anything.  THAT...that is going to bring a lawsuit.
