Look for the Lerners and Kasten to be rebuilding the farm system this year and spending most of the money and effort there.  The plan is to put a competitve post-season contender on the field by 2008.  Just in time for the new stadium and the new product: "Luxury Suites".  This year is the "Twilight Zone".

For 2008? Without signing free agent pitchers or fixing the hole in center field? Dream on my friend...
Hey don't kill the messenger - I'm just regurgitating the crap they are spouting.   :|  Obviously they are going to be making roster moves this year to work TOWARDS 2008.

LOL I sure hope so, especially with only one legitimate starting pitcher...

In Svrluga's article todaya bout Acta and Russel, he mentioned Russel worked under Llyod Mclendon in Pitt and the only quote from Lloyd Mclendon was "He did okay".  I'm not trying to say Svrluga is a terrible writer with this, but either putting that quote in their is useless or it is Svrluga's way of saying the McClendon doesnt think much of Russel

well, do you think much of Lloyd McClendon as a manager?

only thing he's successfully done is get himself thrown out of a lot of games.

I wouldn't trust his opinion, honestly.

McClendon's seemingly low opinion of Russell is most likely due to the fact that there's no way he's going to offer praise about someone who has more managing skills than he does. It would be tantamount to shooting himself in the foot. You could look at McClendon's ho hum "He did okay" response about Russell, as possibly being a way of protecting his own ass. After all, if he gave him too much praise, it could result in his job being in jeopardy.

I'm going to reply to this, and its going to sound silly, but I would be thrilled beyond belief if Russell became manager of the Nats.

That's because my name happens to be the same as his -- "John Russell"

Back when Russell was an active player, he was a reserve catcher for the Phils.  I don't recall who was involved in the trade talks (I think the White Sox coveted Von Hayes, and some of the young Phillie pitchers), and there was a deal on the table that looked like a "done deal," and Russell would have been a "throw in."  I was more excited about a reserve catcher on my favorite team with the same name as me as I was about the major players involved in the trade.  Eventually, Russell went to the Braves, and then the Rangers.

I have heard good things about Russell.  In an interview after last year's World Series win, AJ Pierzynski cited Russell as one of the best manager/coached he ever had (Russell had manged in the Twins system when AJ was coming up).  He has worked with a lot of players who have made it to the big show, and they all seem to speak highly of him.

Say what you want about his lack of major league managing credentials, but Russell is the kind of guy the Nats need -- somebody who will work on fundamentals with less talented players who need development.  The fact that he is a former catcher may also help in his evaluation and guidance for a young pitching staff.
