Unusual batted ball outs

I never knew about the rule that you're out if the ball hits the bat twice on a bunt.

That happened a few weeks ago, and the ump didn't catch it.  Of course you're only allowed to hit a ball once.  Imagine you hit a little nubber straight down, and give it another whack before the catcher can get to it.  Doesn't seem very sporting.

good crowd, tons of boos when bernadina was called out at home ... i watched it live and looked @ replays from miller lite walk and i'll tell you what one of the worst calls i've seen imo.  it reminded me of the reds-nats game when desmond was called out by the 1B umpire and the place went nuts.

The day after, everyone booed West. :)

But in yesterday's play it was accidental that it hit his bat a second time, right?

Yeah, and it was accidental that Nyjer swung at a ball in the dirt and it bounced and hit him. Still out, and still dumb.

It's not dumb. The reason that rule exists was displayed on that very play. A ball striking a player that has struck out can be redirected in such a way that the catcher has no shot to make a play on it.

I'm not sure if you're saying that he was dumb for dropping his bat on the ball, but if you are, you can't really control that. It was a freak circumstance... he should be out, but still.

He was dumb for swinging at a pitch that hit five feet in front of home plate. Poor batting eye.

Wait I thought we were talking about the bunt against the Royals where it hit the guys' bat?

You mean the one where the ball hits the guy in the stands who had a bat in his hand, trying to catch it , while yelling at the ump? That one?

Naw this was the last time the team gave Strasburg no support. Morgan swung at a pitch that hit the ground, then it bounced off him and rolled to the backstop. He was out as soon as it him and it was a dead ball, but we all had to page through our rulebooks.

Oh yeah, I was at that game. We had no clue what happened at the time. That's like what Dibble/Bob was saying (forget which one) about explaining what happens to the crowd.
