Their GM is an idiot. That team is toast in a few years.

for now they are competing every year, I'd trade a potentially decent GM (who knows at this point) and staring a third straight 100 loss season in the face for a terrible GM and a world series win and two WS appearences, a team with two legitimate aces, the best secondbaseman in the game and basically the same first baseman we have. They may suck down the road, but for now their fans get to watch a competitive team now; we get to watch a terrible team now and we may still suck down they road.

LOL.  They'll contend this year.  They might be a .500 team in 2011.  They're absolutely done in 2012.  They just gave a monster contract to a 1B who projects to start breaking down right as they start the new contract.  They've completely handcuffed themselves on payroll with Howard with ridiculous numbers like 25m in 2014.  Their idiot GM put them in a spot where they'll have to spend 10m just to buy out the deal in 2017.  I would personally punch Rizzo in the nuts if he did something like that.

They're going to lose Werth for sure.  Moyer's contract comes off the books and they have 3 arbitration contracts and yet they're still at 134m next year and Oswalt would put them at 150m.  They are screwed for at least 5 years.  That's not worth winning once and making it nearly impossible to keep the core players together.

We won't contend this year. If we're lucky we're a .500 team in 2011, and who knows in 2012. If they are willing to shoulder a huge payroll (you assume ownership considered that before signing off on howard), they are fine. I personally think it is worth winning once, most teams and cores don't even win once.

Thing is they've already won once.  This year they aren't going to do it and they've handicapped themselves for 5 years with no chance to win due to one horrific contract and a series of trades that have emptied their farm system.

The Nats should be neck and neck with the Phillies next season.  The Phillies have 9 contracts for 86m in 2012 along with Cole Hamels up for arbitration that year.  You're likely looking at 95-100m in payroll for 10 people.  Good luck with that.

Since 1980 17 teams have a ring, how many 'cores' never got one? Maybe they think they have 1 or 2 more year before it falls apart and are taking a last shot. With their rotation, they may have one in the playoffs.

Because they were too stupid to keep Cliff Lee at a fraction of the cost.

Oswalt is for at least 2 years, Lee was for 1 and had already made it clear he wanted CC money, then again considering the nothing they got in return, they might as well have kept him.

True. Cliff Lee is a monster. That'd be awesome if we pursued him next year. It would make our potential rotation THAT much better.

Like others have said, the Phillies have made some really stupid moves in the past year or two but it just scares me that they have a Halladay-Oswalt combo. Hopefully we still kick their ass. Tongue Maybe in the next few years our positions will have switched.

I'm fine with Oswalt.

We roughed him up the last time we faced him in Houston.

Why can't we do it again?

So, instead of keeping the lefty Cliff Lee to go with the righty Halladay, they had to make another trade for Oswalt and get rid of not only JA Happ but also a prospect (Gose) good enough to fetch back Brett Wallace.  They must think Phillipe Aumont > Happ and Wallace.  Or they might not have wanted Wallace because they have Ryan Howard under contract. They could have won either way.  At least this way they are squandering assets.

I think Ed Wade knew exactly who he was dealing with when he made the trade. Happ may never be the pitcher Oswalt is, but he has a better future.

McLane did all the details , supposedly. I'm glad Happ is out of the division.

I doubt McLane did anything more than sign off on the $12M being sent to Philly.

Pretty much guarantees they pay the 2m buyout for Berkman and Wallace gets the shot at 1B next year.

They had to clear out some room.  Speaking of which, who replaces Guzman on the 25 man?

Incredibly, they're planning on playing another game with 24.

Lannan takes the open spot tomorrow.  <bleh!>

Isn't Saltalamacchia still a very solid catcher? Did the Red Sox just pull off a superb trade?
