Yep. I'm confident I win.

But... we're still not official until Piniero does not sign here.

He re-signed Olsen. Maybe he is counting him as one? Or maybe he will sign Livan to a cheap Minor League deal.  <skeptical look>

I don't know what signing Garland accomplishes. I don't think that is going to happen. Do you really want to tie up two spots in the rotation to average veterans for the next 2-3 years?

Yeah. I mean I wouldn't complain if we signed Garland too but I don't know if it is in the best interest of this club for the (semi) long term.

I think it's all moot anyways because we are not going to sign another starter in the mold of a Garland. Marquis is it. We will probably get Capps and then a back-up infielder and that is it.

This was our big "splash" signing.

No coincidence:

Brian Bruney (2009 World Series Champion)
Jason Marquis (2006 World Series Champion)
Ivan Rodriguez (2003 World Series Champion)

Rizzo is bringing in players with winning experience to help change the attitude and atmosphere here in D.C.

What is the bet?
Pineiro will put up better numbers than Marquis.

I'm feeling an avatar bet if the Nats sign Marquis but skip Piniero.

I'll take Piniero and someone else takes Marquis. This can be a season long thing, or even to the all-star break... but I'm betting my avatar that Piniero has a better year than Marquis in pretty much every quantifiable way.
That's a sucker bet for you. Marquis will own in ERA, wins, BA, and FIP.

I have a strong record of success in avatar bets, and I'm willing to accept.
Deal. This bet will only take place if the Nats sign Marquis but pass on Piniero. Sound good?

Good innings eater.  We've got three legit SPs right now if Olsen is healthy.  Short contract for decent money.  I preferred a few over Marquis but this will do.  I'd still like to see Garland, Davis, Pineiro or a flyer on Sheets.  Grab Capps or one of the 3 I mentioned in another thread (Calero, Howry, Beimel...Oliver just signed) for the pen.  Get a legit defensive 2B and be done with it.

This is miles ahead of the Pudgy Rod signing and it's a real pitcher instead of Bruney.  Good move to let the young fellas prove their worth in AAA and force their way in.

That's true.  But 9.4 wins/season is not a "winner."  Being left off of playoff rosters - REPEATEDLY - is not a "winner."

It's stupid to determine the value of a SP in the modern era by how many "wins" they get.  Even so, Marquis has 80 in the 6 seasons he's been a full time starter.  That's 13.3 per season.  If you're going to argue pointless team stats in regards to individual performance at least be honest about it.

I was just refuting sportsfan's claim that Marquis is a "winner."

Also, if we really make Jason Marquis our "ace," does anyone think he'll really win 15+ games?

If we make Marquis our ace then he'll do what he's done his entire career.  He'll be slightly above average.  His K/9, WHIP, FIP etc. will all fall within the same range they always have.  How many wins he gets will depend on how well the bullpen holds leads, how much run support he gets and a a myriad of other issues he has absolutely no control over.

This was a 70 win team last year if the real manager had been in charge the whole time.  They've added a legit SP to a rotation that had one healthy one (Lannan) and one returning from injury (Olsen) prior to this signing.  If Olsen is truly healthy then we have 3 guys at the front of the rotation now that will give us 6-7+ innings regularly which rests the bullpen.  Good signing.  Not great, but good.

Very happy with the Jason Marquis signing.  Now one more SP and Capps for the closer role.

Anyone who doesn't recognize this signing improves our team's pitching is nuts.  There are lots of below league average innings on this team to replace...200 at league average is definitely an improvement.

It will also depend on who he pitches against.  We now have Halladay inthe division, we still have Josh Johnson and I don't think he's as good as either Lowe or Vazquez.

Marquis is the type of pitcher you acquire to compliment your pitching staff, not lead it.
