Nats Claim LHP Jesse English Off Waivers
« on: September 10, 2009, 06:40:49 pm »
from Giants & DFA CA Luke Montz

Google search of English shows he's a 2002 draft pick out of HS. Missed a couple of seasons with elbow surgery

DFA him took him off the 40-man right away. Now it's a matter of waivers where someone else can claim him if they want to put him on their 40-man

I did some Googling of articles on English and they are up over at NFA http://www.natsfarm.com

When they chose an injured Flores over calling up Montz, the writing was on the wall. I'm surprised they didn't claim that Osiris guy that just got waived and had good numbers.

Montz was bad this year.

Looks like a decent pick-up possibly. can't hurt.

Just some more beef for the slaughterhouse. Let's give him a go and see what happens.

Do we *really* need another prospect pitcher that will never spend more than a few months in the majors? darn it all, we need *some* position players. We have absolutely none in our farm system. ****, I thought Montz was one of the only potential major league fielder/hitters we had in the minor leagues and we DFA him? This team is in serious trouble in a couple years because there is nobody in AAA and next to nobody in AA and A aside from pitching, pitching and more pitching. We draft pitching prospect, we sign other teams failed pitching prospects and every trade we make off our major league roster includes pitching prospects. I know you can't win without good pitching and you need several pitching prospects to yield on major league pitcher, but seriously, when you have nobody to field/hit anywhere in the farm system, what's the point?

Now we just blew one of our only emergency... Actually, our *only* emergency minor league catcher that could be called up if something crazy happened to our catchers, and one of our few position prospects on... Another pitching prospect. I realize you have an extreme disparity between signing pitching prospects and position players, but I can't recall more than one or two position prospects we've signed/traded for this season, and most of our high round draft picks went towards pitching. Nothing against this kid at all, maybe he'll be great. But I do have something against a probably-not in exchange for losing our only near-major league ready catching prospect.

Montz was trash. Had a terrible year in AA.

He is Minor League fodder.

the hitters are on the way. 2011

He's not near major league ready. He was barely AA ready this year. He regressed like crazy, hitting around the Mendoza line for most of the year. He's a bad defensive catcher and was a good offensive catcher at his level last year and now he doesn't even have that going for him. I'm okay with this move.

Position players are nice to have but pitching is what every major league team needs, and if you can have what everyone else needs then everyone else needs you. the idea behind getting a ton of pitching isn't just because so few of them work out. It is also to deal some of them down the road for position players. Montz was already eclipsed by other catcher prospects and I for one hope Jesus Flores can stay healthy next season and for the seasons to come and we won't need a catcher in the next 5 - 10 years.

I don't care that Montz was dumped, but this seems like a fool's hope given Flores' track record thus far.

If we give up hope then we let them beat us.

If Flores can't stay healthy next year, he's done for as far as him being in our long-term plans.  two years in a row of injuries, third season better be the f'n charm.

Can't hurt.

Worst that happens is the kid turns out to be a bust and we use the 40 man spot on someone else down the line.
